How many poetic books are there in the Old Testament?

Five books are recognized as the poetic or wisdom literature in the Old Testament. These are Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. They’re grouped together because their content is primarily poetic in form—songs, sayings, and reflections—rather than straight historical narrative or prophetic speech. Each contributes a distinct voice: Job’s dialogue on suffering, Psalms’ collection of prayers and songs, Proverbs’ concise wisdom, Ecclesiastes’ philosophical reflections, and Song of Solomon’s lyrical love poetry. Some traditions note Lamentations as highly poetic as well, which could lead to a six-book count in that sense, but the standard listing used in most study contexts is five.
